The spotlight as the prime source of light in the classroom enables the foundation students to understand light and shade on the cubist sculpture of the human head. As the position of this source is changed with eye level as a constant, the planes of the head appear light and dark, which are represented in not more than four flat pencil tones, the fifth and the lightest being the white of the paper itself. A key of these four tones is prepared by each student beforehand and referred to whilst selecting each for a specific lit or not-so-lit plane.
